Inland shipping in Germany gained 3.6% in 2019 over the previous year. According the the national inland shipping association (Bundesverband der Deutschen Binnenschifffahrt) total tonnage amounted to 205 million tonnes. This volume compensates losses due to prolonged periods of low water levels in 2018.

In terms of tonne-kilometres (tkm), the indicator for transport performance, growth was even more stunning at 8.6% year-on-year to approx. 51 billion tkm.

Looking a bit closer, all commodity groups except for crude oil, coal and steel gained in 2019 over 2018. This includes consumer goods (+7.3% in tonnage-terms), which is good news, as those goods are not considered the “traditional” bulk goods of inland shipping.

Happy Easter to everybody – and stay safe!
